12 COMMANDMENTS OF BEING A VOLUNTEER LEADER IN THE ORANGE ELEMENTARY PTA

  1. Welcome new people; be friendly, encourage participation.
  2. Give clear job expectations and timelines.
  3. Be organized.  Be respectful of your volunteers' time.
  4. Delegate the work fairly.
  5. Expect that you will have to give your volunteers reminder calls.
  6. Promptly return phone calls or emails from your
    volunteers.
  7. Make sure your volunteers have real work to do;
    don't make them show up if there isn't a need.
  8. Be responsive to suggestions by your volunteers.
  9. Always speak to your volunteers politely.
  10. If there is a problem, don't play the "blame
    game"; focus on a solution.
  11. If someone outside your volunteer group is
    critical of your efforts, politely remind them that
    we are all volunteers, and sincerely ask if she
    has a suggestion or would like to work with you
    on a solution.
  12. At the end of the project, send a personal thank
    you (not an email) to your volunteers
